My honey and I went out to the western part of South Dakota to see "the sites" this week. We left on Monday and drove for the majority of the day. Thankfully we arrived while there was still daylight so that we could set up our tent at the campground. Then we headed to Rapid City where we went to the mall and ate dinner. After that we went back to the campground and bunked down for the night!
Tuesday, we explored Bear Country, a drive through game park, and also ate lunch at the Mangy Moose in Hill City! We had a wonderful drive through Custer, Hot Springs, and Custer State Park where we saw a heard of buffalo. I have wanted to stay in a roadside motel for a long time so that was our plan for this trip. We went back to Hill City and reserved a room at Harney Peak Motel...so cute and fun. After that it was dinner next door at Alpine Inn, which was amazingly wonderful...we tried to walk the streets to work off some of that wonderful food, but it was very cold outside so we hit the sack at out fun little motel.
On Wednesday, we headed to Fort Hayes at 0730am to have a cowboy chuck wagon breakfast and board a bus for a full day of touring the major sites! We had a great bus driver and that tour was wonderful. We arrived back at Fort Hayes for a chuck wagon dinner and show and then headed to Deadwood around 0900pm. We then bunked down at an adorable motel called the Penny Motel!
We were beat and slept good.
The next morning we got up and started exploring Deadwood and took an hour bus tour to Mt. Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. It was a rainy, cold day, so we got some lunch at Mustang Sally's and then explored some of the shops on main street. We ended out time in Deadwood by stopping in Saloon No. 10, where Wild Bill was killed, to watch a reenactment of his shooting. Little did I know that I would be asked to play a part in the reenactment! That was fun and was a great end to our stay in Deadwood and we headed out at about 0400pm to drive to the Badlands! The Badlands were absolutely breathtaking and I'm so glad that we were able to see them at sunset. I was marveling at God's handy work as we saw the beautiful peaks and plateaus.
We started our drive back to Aberdeen and about 6 hours later arrived home to some very happy kitties!
I will show more pictures, but I wanted to get these up right now.
This is in Pierre, the capitol of South Dakota, which we drove through as we crossed the state.
Wall Drug is a famous stop in Wall, SD, and it was full of interesting things!
Here I am riding a Jackalope at Wall Drugs!
This was the sweetest buffalo!
My honey sitting with the lady in green!
Our beautiful campsite! I have to add in that this camping trip was monumental for the following reason. My honey really does not like to camp, but before we got married he told me he would take me camping. Well, after mentioning it several times myself, I thought that he had just chosen to "forget" about the whole camping thing. Well, my honey did not forget, like I thought, he remembered because it was important to me and he made it happen on this trip. He was an amazing sport about it and we had a great time!! This one night of camping meant more than I could express!!
Stella and me at the campsite.
Our little tent that wasn't quite long enough for my honey's legs! The area was so beautiful...it was so nice to see hills for a change!
My honey and me after a night's sleep in our little tent!
This is at Bear Country and these guys are reindeer.
An Arctic Wolf...and a black bear that did not want to share the road with us.
Bear Country.
This baby bear was so adorable as he made his way down the tree to get some lunch!
Custer State Park...this "daddy" buffalo was huge!
My "hotshot" beside the black hills sign!
More pictures to come...we had an amazing time and really enjoyed our time off together!
Hope everyone is doing well.
Amanda
