Settling in and exploring Taos...

Hey everyone, it's Jason again and it seems like I'm on a blog roll.  Not that I think blogging is that manly, but I just seem to be the one loading pictures onto the computer and therefore make the entries.  Also, the alcove where we have our computer desk here is by a window and fairly cold, so Amanda is sitting on the couch by the fire right now working on our Netbook computer!  Today we officially returned Thelma the trailer and the U-Haul guy was impressed since he hadn't seen that model in "20 to 30 years!"  After that we got my rental car for this assignment which was pretty ho-hum but still important.

This is my new rental car which I have named Earnesto in the spirit of the Hispanic culture in these parts.  He is a dark gray Chevy Malibu and is pretty darned nice.  I got to choose between this and some no-name Dodge and chose the Malibu because I have read over and over that it is a great car that no one will give a chance.  Well, here goes my chance.

The big news for today is that we are actively looking into another housing option here.  I'm worried that our more rural location that they put us in is too remote and somewhat risky for driving in to the hospital early in the morning or for an emergency in the middle of the night.  Also, it's outdated, hard to heat (crucial since it has snowed several times in 3 days and is currently about 14 degrees) with radiant ceiling heat and lots of older windows and sliding glass doors.  On top of that, the washer/dryer is a small trek across the complex which neither of us is excited about in sub-freezing temperatures for the next 5 months or so.  Today we saw a fantastic unit that is newly and modernly renovated with 2 bedrooms and 1 nice bath.  It has forced air heat which actually works within minutes (as compared to hours with our radiant heat, most of which goes into the sky rather than down into our unit, probably) and a room with washer/dryer.  As icing on the cake, it has HDTV, good wireless internet, and all other utilities included.  It's only a bit more than our place, so we're pleading with my company to let us switch and pay the difference.  For those who see this soon and are inclined, please pray that we end up in the place that's best for us, regardless of washer/dryer location.  We've done so much to make this happen that we realized today that it is yet another thing that is not in our control anyway.
These pictures are to end on a high note, as we remind ourselves that we are blessed to live in a beautiful place.   Above is a snowy pass in the mountains that is a 15 minute drive from town, and below is the sunset with snow and clouds in the distance over the rugged prairie to the other side of town.  Amazing.  Well, hope everyone is well and we'll talk to you again soon.

Jason
